...That is not quite so with Johanna Gadski, yet in so many ways hers is a richer legacy of recordings. Ward Marston, who has made so many excellent transfers for Romophone and Pearl, now has his own label (Marston), and among its first undertakings is a complete edition of Gadski's Victor recordings, Volume 1 (two CDs) going from 1903-1909 (reviewed on page 92). The old process catches her Brünnhilde and Isolde remarkably well, and she is continually surprising us with the delicacy and sensitivity of her singing over a wide repertoire. With Alma Gluck, who also has a two-CD compilation, the new label is sure to secure an immediate welcome, for she (exquisite in arias from Atalanta, Hippolyte et Aricie, The Tsar's Bride and Louise) had one of the loveliest voices on records...
