I was delighted to note that Ward Marston has started his own CD label. Initial releases include sundry operatic goodies, but piano-fanciers, will be intrigued by Vol. 5 of "The Complete Josef Hofmann" (Vols. 1-4 are on VAI Audio), which includes HMV, Victor and Columbia test recordings, excerpts from the Curtis Institute Recitals (two versions of Hofmann's Berceuse, one with violinist Efrem Zimbalist) and various broadcast performances - all of them exceedingly rare and interpretatively of considerable interest. It goes without saying that the transfers are truly state-of-the-art while the annotation - by piano aficionado and Hofmann enthusiast Harold C. Schonberg - is both informative and highly readable.
